CAITIE VELASCO

I'm a self-taught ceramicist

working with a focus on simple forms

with small narratives.

Most of my work involves mishima.  Each design starts as a drawing, which I transfer to the clay before carefully carving the pattern into the surface. The carved lines are then filled with contrasting slip, and once it's set, I scrape away the excess to reveal the figures. It's a slow, steady process that creates bold lines and subtle textures.

Because every piece is made by hand, there are variations in the lines, shapes and surfaces. I see these imperfections as part of the appeal. They are reminders that every item was crafted by a real human, one at a time. They give each piece its own character and make no two alike.

All my work is created in my small studio. I try to make ceramics that are both practical and expressive, shaped by both craft and art.
